He'll need his Indian passport with the Chinese visa, but he doesn't need a US passport (since he isn't a citizen). The green card should be irrelevant until you are coming back.

My husband was born in India too and also has a green card. He still needs his passport with a visa to travel to most countries, although when you are dealing with annoying border patrol people, the fact that he has a green card does help. We've traveled to Mexico many times without either a visa or a passport and just his greencard. I don't know if this is totally legal or if the border patrol there just didn't care.

I imagine that if you are going to such a highly controlled area as China and Tibet, you better have everything just in case.

Can't Indians travel to Tibet without a visa, anyway just with his Indian passport?
