If you are from the U.S. and a AAA member, start there. It is usually free for member. If not, go to a bookstore and spend an afternoon reading travel book. You don't have to buy it unless you want to. Then look up information online. That's the order I'd go through and you can go from there. Why? Because you can learn the "buzz words" from travel books and agents first, then easily branch out from there to do online research.

Better yet, is to bring your laptop to Barnes and Noble, get a cup of coffee and doing online research side by side with the travel books and magazines. Good luck and have fun planning.

Lonely Planet gives a lot of detailed information. National Geographic has suggested walking tours. For Hong Kong, their tourism board has a lot of good information online.

Get in contact with a good tour company in China. They will be able to give you lots of advice help you schedule your trip and it is not very expensive and you will have a much better trip. I would also get the lonely planet guide.

I'd say do yourself a favor, spend the money on a lonely planet China book... it is twice as much as the others and 3 times as good. You will not be sorry. Do this first. Also, make friends on-line that are Chinese, they can tell you the nitty gritty also help you with accommodations and pointers.

When I came here the first time, I came to visit friends and spend most of my time with them. They had the inside scoop and language to make it a great trip. I did look on-line too but that only helped when I had an idea of where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do. The magazines and websites can help, but be aware they present China from a commercial perspective. Good Luck!

Actually, I'm still researching. One thing I do is to hang around here on Y/A to learn. I also have some Chinese friends and I ask them things. My hope is to spend 2 years at least in China. I really want to know something about China and not just be another tourist.
