Can I volunteer in China under an F visa with a different company?

In light of the recent changes in Chinese visa laws, can I volunteer for a local Chinese company when my F visa is under a different company? I heard that even if you’re just volunteering and not receiving any compensation, your visa has to be with that company because of liability issues.
