    It was made to keep the Mongols and other vicious tribes of the north at bay. Unfortunately, it didn’t work.

    Each time, somebody bribed a gatekeeper.

  6. To defend the enlightened Chinese against the barbarians hordes of the nothern tribes of Mongols, and to collect ($) tribute from those crossing in and out of china and to establish Chinas northern border.
